Decatur is home to unique and special attractions all within reach, like the Children’s Museum of Illinois. This beloved museum is a family favorite full of exhibits that teach and inspire kids and adults. Located near the equally enchanting Scovill Zoo, the Children’s Museum can provide endless fun and learning every time you visit. If you haven’t been lately, then it’s time you planned a day out at the Children’s Museum of Illinois.
A Place Full of Fun
Two floors in the large building hold many exhibits. Children can explore each area at their own pace. Of course, the hands-on activities spark young minds to think and create. Other parts inspire kids to observe and learn. And whether kids are visiting for the first time or the tenth, each section engages and holds great potential. Admission for members and children under two is free. However, adults and children older than two will pay $9 without a membership. Visit the museum Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 4:30 p.m.
Inspired Exhibits
On the first floor, kids can begin by exploring Seed to Shelf. Here, they’ll learn about our food’s many routes from field to table. Next, children can tinker with cars in a kid-sized service shop at the Super Service Center. There, you’ll watch your little ones get inspired to try their hand at car repairs.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. On the second floor, you’ll discover even more hands-on fun. The Healthy Habits exhibit covers everything from teeth brushing to visiting a hospital. Of course, you won’t want to miss one of the newest features, which lets kids go inside of an eyeball to learn about how vision works. Finally, you’ll end up at the Construction section, full of large bricks and blocks and just waiting for inspired young builders.
Artists and Toddlers Welcome
Budding painters to aspiring chefs will find exhibits that encourage artists and crafters. In fact, Mamma Mia’s Pizzeria is one of the most popular spots. Another spot that kids love to return to over and over is the little theater. There, they can imagine anything and act it out on stage. Finally, even toddlers are welcome at the Children’s Museum. There are two areas on each floor, sized just for the smallest visitors.
The Duck Derby
Support the museum, and you could win big this year at the Duck Derby. Join the fun and watch the rubber ducks race on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In addition, families can also visit the yummy food trucks, explore outdoor activities, and play games. There’s still time to get in on the Duck Derby and get your ducks in the race, so check the website to buy.
