Prepare Your Car For Travel This Season

Are you gearing up for a big road trip with the family this summer? Once your plans are set, take some time to get your vehicle ready for the road. AAA lists several tasks you will want to complete to prepare your car for travel this summer.

Make Your Tires Road Ready

Give your tires a once-over, ensuring they do not have any cracks, bulges, or other signs of damage. Next, use a quarter to check the tread. Just slip it face down between the grooves and see if the top of George Washington’s head is visible. If it is, get new tires before heading out.

Finally, you need to ensure you have the proper amount of air in your tires. First, check your owner’s manual for the recommended pressure. Then check the pressure and add or remove air if the tires are under or overinflated.

Check the Fluids

It is a good idea to check your car’s oil and other fluids before embarking on a road trip. If any of the fluids are low, check your owner’s manual to ensure you select the right products. Then top the fluids off so you will not run into trouble on the road.

Inspect the Battery

Pop your car’s hood and look at the battery. Clean the connections and make sure the battery is secure. Also, if you have a battery tester, use it to ensure your battery has enough juice. If not, you can take it to a mechanic for a quick test.

Test the Brakes

You do not want to have any issues with your brakes during your trip, so test them before departing. If you notice any vibrations or grinding noises when braking, it is time to take your car to a mechanic. You might need new shoes, drums, rotors, or pads.

Swap Out Your Wiper Blades

Wiper blades do not last forever, and you do not want to end up in a rainstorm with windshield wipers that do not work. Since they are so cheap, go ahead and replace the blades. While you are at it, check the windshield cleaner, too. Be sure to fill up the reservoir so you can clean your windshield on the go.

Restock Your Emergency Kit

Finally, make sure your car’s emergency kit has everything you need. Fill it with first-aid supplies, snacks, water, tools, and a flashlight. Also, you need to have reflectors and booster cables in case anything goes wrong on the road.
