Give Back This Holiday Season

Family donating gifts and toys to charity for Christmas holiday

Are you looking for ways to give back this holiday season? If so, Decatur is full of opportunities for you to help those in need. From ensuring children have gifts to open on Christmas to providing food to the hungry, these opportunities will allow you to make a real difference in people’s lives. First, get the details on some of the top volunteer and donation options in Decatur. Then you can take the next steps to support your community.

The Good Samaritan Inn

First, you can feed the hungry by volunteering at The Good Samaritan Inn. The non-profit organization currently needs volunteers for its Noon Meal Program. This vital program serves meals to the hungry seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition, volunteers are needed to serve food on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mercy Gardens.

Northeast Community Fund

Next, you can also ensure that Macon County residents get enough to eat over the holidays by volunteering at the Northeast Community Fund. As a volunteer, you can help the food pantry create and distribute food baskets to those in need. The special holiday food baskets are always a treat and help the recipients celebrate the season.

Coats for Kids

Sadly, some children don’t have coats to put on when the temperature drops. However, you can do your part to change that by donating coats. Dove, Inc. and WAND-TV are sponsoring Coats for Kids through Nov. 30, and you can drop off gently used or new coats at area dry cleaners.  Then the dry cleaners clean the coats if needed so the recipients can wear them immediately.

Toys for Tots

Children spend weeks leading up to Christmas counting down the days. They cannot wait for Santa to come and deliver presents. Unfortunately, some parents don’t have the money needed to buy gifts for their little ones. You can step in and ensure the kids have an amazing holiday season by donating to Toys for Tots.

If you want to help, bring a toy or two to one of the drop-off sites in the area. Walmart North, Walmart South, Rural King, WAND-TV, and Bob Brady Auto Mall are just some of the drop-off locations.

As you can see, there are numerous ways to give back to your community this holiday season. Some of the options are only available during the holidays, but others are open year-round. For instance, you can continue to volunteer at The Good Samaritan Inn and the Northeast Community Fund well after the holiday season ends. So, whether you only help out during the holidays or stick around into the new year, you’ll love the way you feel when helping the less fortunate in your community.
