Decatur residents love Scovill Zoo, and it’s time for you to see what’s new. Since 1967, the Scovill Zoo has educated the community and showcased unique and beautiful creatures. Visitors can see over 400 animals on 15 acres and look at gardens and a recently upgraded sculpture park. And if all of that wasn’t enough, visitors can get free admission on Thursdays.

Planning Your Trip

Visitors can enjoy the Scovill Zoo from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily for the summer season. Usually, adult ticket prices are $8.75, and children’s tickets are $6.75, but Thursdays are free. By planning to visit on a Thursday, you can save big on your family adventure. Use your savings to go for smile-inducing rides on the Endangered Species Carousel, or sit back and enjoy the ride on the Z. O. & O. Express Train.

Find Your Favorite Animal

The Scovill Zoo delivers hundreds of animals, insects, and more in a beautiful and easily walkable location. From yellow-banded mongooses to the endangered cheetah, everyone is sure to find their favorite animal. With over 400 animals, you’re sure to learn something new. And don’t forget about the small but mighty zoo residents. Catch a glimpse if you dare of the tarantulas and Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches for some creepy-crawly fun.

Amazing Amenities for All Ages

Kids and adults alike enjoy the Endangered Species Carousel. For $3, ride one of the 30 hand-carved wooden creatures, whether you’re four or 64. After that, let the kids run wild at Project Playground II. Of course, entry to the playground is free, and kids can get all their wiggles out on multiple slides and swings. This playground also features a real rock wall for adventurous climbers and a music station for spontaneous artistry.

All Aboard the Z. O. & O. Express

For many visitors, the train ride is the highlight of the visit. The Z. O. & O. Express has operated at the Scovill Zoo since 1984 and is ADA accessible so that everyone can enjoy this popular attraction. Recently extended in 2019, the train delivers incredible views overlooking even more animals. And as if that weren’t enough, the train route also crosses a 30-foot-high bridge and provides breathtaking views of Lake Decatur. In addition, riders can see parts of Sculpture Park and even access the Children’s Museum of Illinois.
